Thank you for your article -- I live in Oakland, California and I have been looking for years to find the Overton cosmetic line face powder for African American women that I used in the 70's and 80's - it was called Overton's "Nut Brown" and was the most beautiful makeup I have ever used. It complimented my skin tone to a T, and I haven't been able to duplicate that look since. Do you know of anywhere I can go on the Internet to see if I can find anyone that may have any of the Overton line of makeups (perhaps an older African American woman who may have it in her possession). I would appreciate a response via email or call me at xxxxxxx. I would pay a pretty penny to get my hands on this makeup. Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi! I was browsing around trying to find some info on the "As The Petals" face powder box I own. It appears to be the same one you have pictured here....3 inch round 2 inch high cardboard type box. Mine has a couple of small issues with the paper and is mostly full of the original white face powder. Might you be interested in it? Sue

Love this! It combines some of my favorite things: silent films, the '20s, Edna Purviance, and true crime. What a time!

Posting this on twitter today for my fellow true crime aficionados. Now, off to practice my charleston moves.

And aside, my parents married in LA in '46, and were there when Elizabeth Short was murdered. My mother always talked about The Black Dahlia. Probably the beginnings of my interest in true crime!

Of course, I missed this lecture by quite some time, and I am not in LA, anyway... But! If I would have been in LA, I would absolutely have been there! Any chance it's on YouTube?

Regardless, I have just discovered your site and am really, really enjoying it. I discovered my love of all things LA, especially the noir-ish side, about seven years ago on a family roadtrip from Eugene, OR. I was never remotely interested before that, but was suddenly absolutely captivated. Your blog will certainly be another wonderful resource for my LA obsession!

All the best,

Rats! Wish I'd seen Felonious Flappers earlier as it would have been the bees knees to go ! Do you have a newsletter or any type of email notification so I won't miss any upcoming events?

I collect vintage clothing Victorian through 1920s; antique lingerie and also now antique lace. I give presentations on a variety of Victorian Era topics. Everyone enjoys the antique lingerie one and I just ordered an 1840 petticoat ...

Can't wait to see more events on your calendar!

In Molina's play, actually, what ghosts eat is made clear in what I imagine was supposed to be a terrifying scene: when Don Juan comes to the graveyard to dine with the ghost-statue, he is served fingernail casserole, tarantulas, and other such delicacies of the dead. Then the statue drags him off to Hell.

Nice site, good entry. Glad I've discovered it!

I've written about Zoe a few times at my site, "Carole & Co." (yes, it's dedicated to Carole Lombard, her life and times).

First, an entry on a <i>True Confessions</i> cover she designed for the Lombard film "True Confession" (yep, a tie-in): http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/134359.html

Two more Carole covers from Zoe: http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/199723.html

Again, continued success.

[...] Here’s an interesting blog post about Sally Rand, dealing in part with my use of her as a character in a number of the Nate Heller books (and complimentary about how I did so). This comes at a funny moment, since I’m working on the new Heller right now (the JFK book) and Sally Rand (aka Helen Beck) is back. She is, in fact, the love interest – a man and a woman in their late fifties having sex…romantic or sickening? Your call. [...]
